Presentation:
Reducing recidivism through risk relevant therapy: case studies and practical applications
After arrest and conviction, many offenders convicted of internet child abuse material offences face mandatory or voluntary treatment. A review of currently available programs highlights limitations in treatment options for this cohort. Targeted treatment based on specific assessment and individualised needs, delivered through a compassionate therapeutic style will add an additional layer to child protection by optimising opportunities for change. In this way, offender behaviour change directly contributes to reductions in reoffending and the protection of children.
Through the presentation of selected case studies that consider different offence types and current treatment programs, this presentation will then introduce a conceptual framework for individually targeted, offence-specific treatment. This approach provides scope for significant improvements to the treatment of internet child abuse material offenders. Combining risk relevant and compassionate therapies, the diversity of online offenders is recognised and used to inform focussed assessment and individualised treatment. Accurate assessment and identification of individualised risks enables targeted treatment for improved rehabilitative outcomes and community protection.
