Kelly Humphries is a Research Fellow with the Artificial Intelligence for Law Enforcement and Community Safety (AiLECS) program at Monash University. A former Queensland Police Officer and survivor of child sexual abuse, Kelly brings a distinct combination of professional and lived experience to her work across policing, technology, and justice systems.
Her research centres on protecting children, victims, and survivors of abuse, while also supporting the practitioners and police who work in these complex and high-impact environments. She focuses on embedding trauma-informed, victim-centred approaches into systems, processes, and emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, to reduce harm and improve responses to abuse.
Kelly's work examines how systems can inadvertently perpetuate trauma, and how they can be redesigned to better recognise, respond to, and interrupt cycles of harm. She is particularly interested in how technology can be applied in ways that are ethical, accountable, and grounded in the realities of frontline practice.
Alongside her research, Kelly is an advocate for reform across policing and justice systems, with a focus on creating safer, more effective approaches that prioritise the wellbeing of children, victims and survivors, as well as the professionals responsible for their care and protection.
